Principle

An accidental is a symbol that can be placed
befor a note to alter its pitch. Most common accidentals change this
value by one semitone : they are called sharp and flat.
Some kinds of music use more precise accidentals that sharp and flat, for instance arabic, oriental or contemporary music.

There are several ways of displaying microtonal accidentals. Harmony Assistant manages five of them :
- Arabic mode. This mode mainly uses quarter tones.
In this mode for instance, the flat quarter tone is displayed as a
dashed flat.
- Persian mode, with sori and koron : plus or minus a quarter tone
- The 72-EDO standard, "gost" display (Gould + Stein
/ Zimmermann). Predefined accidentals are distributed each 16th of
tone.
- The 72-EDO standard, "wys" display
(Wyschnegradsky). Predefined accidentals are distributed each 16th of
tone.
- The occidental quarter tone model.
Using microtonal accidentals

The accidental can be general for all notes of
the same pitch in the whole staff (key signature). It is then written
just after the clef.
The accidental can also alter only a specified note.

To relate a a non-semitone accidental to a note, edit the note and use the "Ornament" tab.0
When adding such an accidental, it takes a default value that you can change afterward.

Available through the "Windows" menu, it enables to select the accidental to relate to the note.
Standard (semitone) accidentals are also available as recall and an icon selects between the 4 kinds of appearance.
Microtonal key signatures

To select a predefined microtonal key signature,
click on the bar with the key signature change tool, then in the key
signature list.
To define a microtonal key signature manually, for each degree, click in
the list on #, b or µ. If you click the µ button, you can change the
appearance and microtonal vale by clicking the next button.
You can then add this new key signature to the list for reusing it easily.
As for "regular" key signatures, you can select the way this new key
signature will be applied to the other key signatures already present in
the score.

Microtonal accidentals can be used on notes in accompaniment patterns.
Export/Import

Accidentals known by MusicXML are imported and exported in this format
Microtonal accidentals are fully compatible with the Myrweb format.
