Chord inversions

Introduction

Chord inversions are different ways of notating and playing the same chord.

Music Theory

The minimum number of notes to compose a chord is 3.
For instance, an E chord will include the fundamental : E, the third G, the fifth B.
So from bass to treble : E, G, B
But the same chord can also be played G, B, E (with the G as bassest - root- note) or B, G, E
These are the three possible inversions for the E chord

They are notated as : E, E/G and E/B

To play several chords in turn on a piano keyboard, a careful choice of inversion can greatly ease transitions.

Harmony Assistant will compute inversions for you, while letting you change them individually.

Automatic computation

Configuration of chords related to the staff is made through the "Staves > Chord display" menu option.
When the computation mode is set to "automatic", chords are computed according to the current key signature and the notes written on the staff.
If "Compute inversion" mode is active, inversions are computed each time the staff is modified

Note : Asking for Piano chord diagram display will show you the chord fingering

If automatic computation is deactivated, chord editing is manual.

When editing is manual, inversions are only computed on demand.

When chords are entered manually, you can edit them directly on score or globally as a whole text.

Manual chord editing as text

Text editing is made either through the "Edit" button from "Staves > Chord display" menu option, or through "Edit chords as text" from the staff contextual menu.

When editing, the '/' characters means bar (measure) change, so the character '\' has to be used to notate inversions. It will be substituted when displayed.

The contextual menu enables to apply operations to the text. If part of the text is selected, it applies to the selected area, otherwise to the whole text :
  • Compute inversions
  • Delete inversions
  • Delect commands (see chapter about chord line)

You can also :

  • Set up inversion calculation

Manual chord editing on score

Right-clicking a chord name in the chord line related to the staff opens the contextual menu for selecting inversion.
You you select an inversion name, it will be "frozen" and won't be changed if you ask for computing inversions. Other chords will be adapted to respect the imposed chord.
If you select "Automatic" the chord will be recomputed when asked for.

Computing setup

This defines how chord inversions will be calculated. The goal is to limit hand movements and keep as much as possible the fingers on place

Relevance of static finger: chord sequence with as many steady fingers as possible will be favored

Relevance of static base note: from a chord to another, the root note (that gives the inversion its name) will be preserved as much as possible

Computation depth: the bigger the deph, the more pertinent will be the computation (but also the longer)
If too long, an alert will be displayed, asking you to reduce computation depth for this staff. This alert can be masked.

Note: To reactivate masked alerts, use the "Interface" section in the global setup box.
