Unaddressed Myriad PDF2Music Pro Installer Defect

There is an outstanding defect in the Myriad PDF2Music Pro installer that is readily reproduceable in Windows Sandbox.  Per the guidance in the "Read Me First" post pinned in this forum, this issue was reported via support email and receipt acknowledged, but it has been four weeks now of emailing without receiving support for this defect.

Background:
Based on some testing, the installer will at some point attempt to write to the "Documents" folder for the current user, but on the target system, no files are getting written to there.  At the 91% mark, installer writes to the application folder under %ProgramFiles% appears to be complete (with 1,155 files and 115 folders created, matching an install on a sandbox setup), but there is no "Myriad Documents" folder under the current user's "Documents" folder.  The installer fails at this point, and the installation rolls back.

Applicable Microsoft Documentation:
The target installation environment is a domain-joined environment with Group Policies in place enforcing roaming profiles and folder redirection, but the problem can be simplified and reproduced without the need for a domain or Group Policy.

In the official Microsoft documentation, note Microsoft's explicit support for redirecting folders such as "Documents" to network shares:

No other software installs on this computer have had issues with the folder redirection of the Documents folder, so this has solely been an issue with Myriad Software.

Steps to Reproduce:
By following the steps below in Windows Sandbox, the problem with the PDFtoMusic Pro installer being unable to properly handle folder redirection to network paths can be readily replicated (even without the computer being on a domain or network, the error can still be replicated by using \\localhost\C$):

  • Log onto a Windows 10 64-bit system as user with administrative rights
  • Create a folder C:\Docs
  • Navigate to \\localhost\C$\Docs in the Windows File Explorer and verify that you can read and write to this path
  • Complete the following sub-steps that are based on Microsoft documentation for folder redirection:

    • Open the Windows File Explorer
    • Navigate to the "Quick Access" section and find the "Documents" folder
    • Right-click on that "Documents" folder and click "Properties"
    • Switch to the "Location" tab
    • Enter "\\localhost\C$\Docs" as the path (without the quotes)

  • Run the PDFtoMusic Pro 64-bit installer

The Myriad PDF2Music Pro installer will fail in the exact same manner as encountered on the domain-joined workstation with folder-redirection policies.

Summary:
By isolating the Myriad PDF2Music Pro install using Windows Sandbox, this has shown to be an installer defect, with to the installer failing to properly handle network paths in accordance with Microsoft documentation.

Thank you

I would not advise against unusual installation files, but the risk is higher to get into errors.
If your problem was acknowledged, it will probably be solved with the installer of a forthcoming delivery.

In the mean time, if your "sandbox" installation was successful, I'd suggest you to move the files created there at the indirect locations you desire. You can then create a shortcut at that place.

Out of memory, the installation process does not place any files in "Myriad Documents", only folders; nor in the "Preferences" folder. If these folders are missing, they are recreated when you start the program.

I appreciate the follow up.

I was able to launch a Windows Sandbox session and install PDF2Music Pro when not replicating the Active Directory Folder Redirection Group Policy.  From there, I grabbed a copy of the "C:\Program Files\PDF2Music Pro" folder.

Then, in a new Windows Sandbox session replicating the policies, I pasted a copy of that folder under the "C:\Program Files\" folder.  On running PDF2Music Pro, not only did it create the folders and files under "Documents" like @ANdre_B noted, but it correctly used the path from the policy (\\localhost\C$\Docs) and even defaulted the initial "open" dialog to that network "Documents" path.

It appears the installer also creates some demo files that the program itself does not create if the "Myriad Documents" folder is missing when launched, but of course such demo files are not needed for program usage.

In short, it appears the issue is limited to the installer, as the app seems to be able to handle policy-applied network paths.  Hopefully, then, this can be addressed in the installer….
