VS not reading a vowel

Thought I'd share this. The word "Gloria" spread over three notes as they would be sung ie. Glo-ri-a. VS does not pick up the "a" at the end at all. All you get is "Glor-i" I've finally found a work-around by adding the letter "r" to the "a" so that it reads "Glo-ri-ar" then VS picks it up. It might help anyone doing christmas carols ....!

| Well, it's also an English personal name, so VS should be able to cope with it. NB. It looks like US English does cope with it, but UK English doesn't. -- Steve

Indeed, Steve, English knows the word, but in both versions and hyphenated or not, it will mute the final "a", making it eventually a #@ or a #V. That's why the word has become "glory", I'd guess. Of course, in a latin text the [!lat] is almost unavoidable in the context "gloria in excelsis..." What becomes tricky is when songs in English include words like "Amen" or "Alleluia" (sometimes "Halleluja" or whatever). I have heard [#eI-mEn] and [#El-le-...]

Peut-être en ajoutant un "h" après le "a". Glo-ri-ah

I've noticed a few problems with the English dictionaries. The word I run up against quite often is "Bethlehem," which is improperly pronounced in British, while fine in American. Go figure! What I do with "gloria" is to write it "glo-ri-a[ah]," which gives VS the desired pronunciation. The letters between brackets show only when you are editing the lyrics. Plain brackets indicate a pronunciation spelled in the current (specified) language (e.g., [oh] for English, [eaux] for French; pronunciations of the form "[#. . .]" indicate pronunciations in SAMPA, which is a way of writing the IPA alphabet in keyboard characters. To find out what the SAMPA for the final 'a' is, look in the documentation. I maintain a list of pronunciation corrections for English words common in Church music, so as to avoid having to look up the SAMPA every time.

I forgot to mention that sometimes when VS is behaving oddly, it pays to look closely at the lyrics in the Edit box. Usually there is a character present somewhere in the vicinity that oughn't to be there.

| For me, that still gives the wrong vowel in the middle syllable (i.e. glO-raI-A) in UK English.
